Getzlaf, Beauchemin vault Ducks past Red Wings
Oct 30, 2008 - 6:44 AM ANAHEIM, California (Ticker) -- Teemu Selanne recorded a hat trick and defenseman Francois Beauchemin tapped in the game-winning goal 1:39 into overtime as the Anaheim Ducks posted their fifth straight win, a 5-4 triumph over the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday.Jean Sebastien-Giguere stopped 34 shots for Anaheim, which won the battle between the last two Stanley Cup champions
Ryan Getzlaf collected a career-high five assists, including one on the game-winning tally. Getzlaf skated by a defender and unleashed a quick wrist shot on goaltender Chris Osgood, who deflected the puck into the air, and Beauchemin knocked it in.
There was a video review to see if Beauchemin's stick was above the crossbar, but the goal was upheld.
"I thought it wasn't that close, but when I looked at the replay, it looked pretty even to me," Beauchemin said. "I thought it was good, for sure. I didn't think it was that close.
Getzlaf could not remember the last time he recorded five assists, saying it was probably in pee-wee play.
"Tonight was a matter of things clicking," Getzlaf said. "You got Teemu shooting the lights out. It was nice to be involved in a play like that."
Pavel Datysuk and Henrik Zetterberg each scored twice for Detroit, which had its five-game winning streak snapped and fell to 5-1-0 on the road.
Selanne's 21st career hat trick and Brian Sutherby's goal with 7:04 left in the the third period that snapped a 3-3 tie were not enough to hold off Detroit in regulation.
Zetterberg sent the game into the extra session when he ripped a wrist shot past Giguere from the slot with 83 seconds left in the third. It was the seventh goal in the last six games for the 2008 Conn Smythe Trophy winner.
All of Selanne's tallies came on the power play, tying the franchise record set by Paul Kariya in 2001. Selanne's first two tallies were scored during 5-on-3 advantages.
"We know that special teams can win a lot of games, and this was a good example," Selanne said.
The Finn knotted the game at 3-3 on a one-timer at 4:50 of the third period after drawing the Ducks within one with 51 seconds remaining in the second.
"We were down one goal going into the third and we found a way to win a game against a great hockey club," Selanne said. "I thought it was very important for us."
Selanne, who moved into 21st place on the all-time goals list, credited his teammates for his huge night.
"Great passes," Selanne said. "It's a great feeling when you play with players like (Getzlaf) and (Corey) Perry and (Scott Niedermayer) and (Chris Pronger). The list is long. You know that when you get open, the puck is coming.
"Every goal is special, but hat tricks don't come very often, so of course it's a great feeling."
Chris Osgood stopped 29 shots for Detroit, which converted 2-of-7 power-play chances. The Red Wings have scored at least once with the man advantage in eight consecutive games.
However, it was the power-play goals they allowed that Detroit players were talking about.
"I think that cost us the game again," Red Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom said. "That is how they came back into the game to get their third power play goal. In the long run, it is going to hurt us."
"We were up, the game was in our hands," Detroit's Marian Hossa said. "We just gave it away. We cannot afford to play 5-on-3 for so long."
