Surging Flyers aim for fifth straight win
Nov 2, 2008 - 2:01 PM Edmonton (5-4-1) at Philadelphia (4-3-3), 1:00 p.m. ESTPHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- The Philadelphia Flyers started the season in horrible form, but as the spirits of the city have risen, so have the fortunes of the hockey team.
The Flyers will be looking to earn their fifth straight win when they take on the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday.
The City of Brotherly Love saw its 25-year championship drought come to an end on Wednesday when the Philadelphia Phillies downed the Tampa Bay Rays in five games to win the World Series.
The Flyers' current run of success began just as the Phillies were claiming the final three games of the Fall Classic.
Philadelphia has outscored the opposition, 19-7, over its past four games, including a 3-2 overtime victory over the New York Islanders on Thursday. Jeff Carter blasted a one-timer from the left faceoff circle with 24 seconds remaining in the extra period.
Carter has been key to the Flyers' success of late, scoring six goals in as many games.
The Oilers snapped a streak of five straight contests without a win - totaling one point over that span - when they scored three unanswered goals to earn a 3-1 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday.
Captain Ethan Moreau snapped a 1-1 tie with an unassisted tally with 88 seconds remaining and added an empty-net goal with 35 seconds left in the contest to provide the winning margin.
Dwayne Roloson earned his first win of the season, stopping 33 shots.
