Devils host Sabres without Brodeur

Nov 3, 2008 - 2:26 PM Buffalo (7-2-2) at New Jersey (6-2-2), 7:00 pm EDT

NEWARK, New Jersey (Ticker) -- The New Jersey Devils have sustained a fair amount injuries. Their latest one will surely sting a bit more than the others.

Four-time Vezina Trophy winner Martin Brodeur will not play when the Devils host the Buffalo Sabres on Monday.

The 36-year-old future Hall of Fame goaltender left midway through the second period of Saturday's 6-1 victory over the Atlanta Thrashers with an elbow injury.

Brodeur seemed to injure his left elbow scrambling to make a stop during a flurry of traffic in front of the net. He was scheduled to undergo an MRI and X-rays on Sunday.

Brodeur was credited for the victory against the Thrashers - No. 544 in his career - and now trails Patrick Roy's all-time record of 551 by seven. He also needs five shutouts to tie Terry Sawchuk's all-time mark of 103.

His replacement, Kevin Weekes, was extremely sharp and turned aside 14 of the 15 shots he faced, but the Devils are heading into unfamiliar territory. Brodeur last missed significant time from October 28 through November 8, 2005, a span of six games when the Devils went 2-2-2.

Brodeur has started the Devils' last 56 games (regular season and playoffs), including all 10 this season. Since 1997-98, he hasn't played fewer than 4,000 minutes in a season, and has at least 30 wins in every season since 1995-96.

Already without Bobby Holik, Brian Rolston and defensemen Andy Greene and Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond, the Devils' offense will need to continue its production.

With two more goals Saturday, Zach Parise tied the team record by extending his goal streak to six games. Holik, Pat Verbeek, Valeri Zelepukin and Kirk Muller also scored goals is six consecutive games for the Devils. Holik was the last to do it, from December 5 to 18, 1998.

Parise, who has seven goals during his streak, leads the team and ranks second in the NHL with nine goals in 10 games. Buffalo's Thomas Vanek is the current leader with 11.

Buffalo snapped a three-game losing skid with a 5-0 win over the Washington Capitals on Saturday. Vanek netted two goals and Ryan Miller made 29 saves for his eighth career shutout.

Miller leads the NHL with a 1.82 goals-against average, but has struggled against New Jersey, going 3-6-3 with a 2.52 GAA in 12 career games.
