Bruins look to bounce back against Maple Leafs
Nov 17, 2008 - 2:23 PM Boston (10-3-4) at Toronto (7-7-4), 7:30 pm ESTTORONTO (Ticker) -- The Boston Bruins vanquished the Toronto Maple Leafs in their last meeting at home and hope to do the same on the road when they visit their Northeast Division rival on Monday.
Boston had its five-game winning streak snapped with a 3-2 shootout loss to the New York Rangers on Saturday. The Bruins squandered a two-goal lead in the third period and could have moved one point behind the Rangers in the race for the Eastern Conference lead, but dropped four back instead.
Dennis Wideman scored a shorthanded goal and defenseman Zdeno Chara's tally was just his second in 17 games this season after scoring a career-high 17 in 2007-08.
The Bruins' defensive prowess is a major factor why they still sit atop the Northeast Division with 24 points - two ahead of the Montreal Canadiens. Boston last yielded more than three goals in a 5-4 victory over the Atlanta Thrashers on October 25, and has given up two or less in its last six games.
The Maple Leafs, meanwhile, have won only two of their last six contests. They skated to a 5-4 win over the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday, but fell, 4-2, to the Vancouver Canucks two days later.
Toronto's power play came into that game ranked third in the NHL and scored seven times in 16 chances over the previous three games, but was just 1-for-8 thanks to defenseman Ian White, who converted on its final try.
Beginning a three-game homestand, the Maple Leafs continue to get great production from Mikhail Grabovski, who has 10 points in his last seven contests.
Toronto defeated the Bruins, 4-2, in the teams' first meeting this season on October 23 in Boston.
