Canadiens seek second straight win after skid
Nov 18, 2008 - 1:25 PM Montreal (10-4-2) at Carolina (9-7-2), 7:00 pm ESTRALEIGH, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Alex Kovalev and the Montreal Canadiens look to put a recent slump behind them when they visit the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday.
Kovalev scored the decisive goal in a 3-2 shootout win over the St. Louis Blues on Sunday as Montreal claimed just its second win in six games.
Carey Price made 24 saves and helped bail out their fizzling offense unit, which has produced just 15 goals in the last six contests.
The Montreal power play has been particularly poor of late, producing just two goals in their last 36 chances.
Montreal started the season 8-1-1 and then proceeded to slip into their unsuccessful stretch, while watching the Boston Bruins take command of the Northeast Division.
Prior to the win over the Blues, Price was peppered in a 6-1 loss to the Bruins on Thursday and then backup netminder Jaroslav Halak fell, 2-1, to the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday.
Carolina, meanwhile, edged the Tampa Bay Lightning in a 3-2 shootout on Sunday to end a three-game losing streak. The Hurricanes' offense has also failed to produce lately, scoring 11 goals in the last six contests.
Captain center Rod Brind'Amour is riding a five-game points streak in which he has three goals and two assists.
The Hurricanes are 8-2-2 in their last 12 meetings with the Canadiens, and Eric Staal has eight goals and eight assists in those games.
In the teams' only matchup this season, the Canadiens ended a six-game losing streak at home against the Hurricanes with a 3-2 shootout win on October 28.
