Oilers end Sharks' nine-game winning streak in OT
Dec 7, 2008 - 7:08 AM By Michael Duca PA SportsTicker Contributing WriterSAN JOSE, California (Ticker) -- Kyle Brodziak scored at 2:40 of overtime as the Edmonton Oilers snapped the San Jose Sharks' nine-game winning streak Saturday with a 3-2 victory.
Ales Hemsky and Dustin Penner also tallied for the Oilers, who were completely dominated throughout the contest and outshot by a 43-17 margin.
Luckily, goaltender Dwayne Roloson was up to the task. He turned aside 41 shots, including one while without his mask to keep the game tied in the third period.
"That's how we've won in here in the past - we've just relied on that type of goaltending out of (Roloson)," Oilers coach Craig MacTavish said. "They missed a few good quality chances. But Roloson, you get the sense that when he's on top of his game like that, it's going to have to be a rebound or a bad deflection that's going to beat him.
"He was on everything. He was definitely the reason we were around in the end to win."
Defenseman Dan Boyle and Jeremy Roenick scored for the Sharks, who still have not lost a home game in regulation this season (14-0-2).
"We weren't disappointed with the effort," Sharks coach Todd McLellan said. "The results didn't show up the way we wanted them to. We got beat by a pretty good goaltender tonight."
San Jose tied an NHL record by playing its 25th consecutive game on home ice without a regulation loss dating back to last March 10, when Roloson was the winning goalie.
"Goaltending was huge tonight," Horcoff said. "Rolly was obviously the difference for us. I think we played a smart game, and as the game wore on, we just hung on."
Brodziak accepted a pass from Shawn Horcoff to the left of netminder Evgeni Nabokov and managed to bank his shot off defenseman Christian Ehrhoff's skate and into the net just over halfway through the extra session for his fifth goal of the season and Edmonton's third win in four games.
"I was trying to take away the pass across and it hits me right in the toe and goes in the net," Ehrhoff said. "That's something you can't control. If it goes through, then the other guy puts it in the empty net."
It took the Oilers nearly nine minutes to register a shot, but their first found its way past Nabokov.
"Obviously, when you have one shot in a period, it's not that easy," Nabokov said. "You want to feel the game, you want to feel the flow, but there's nothing I could do, just try to stay focused and stay in the game."
Sharks right wing Devin Setoguchi's clearing pass off the side boards was picked off by Penner, who dished the puck to Hemsky at the blue line. Hemsky made a nice toe drag and fired a slap shot that beat Nabokov to the stick side from the high slot at 8:50 of the opening period.
San Jose held a 15-1 advantage in shots when Penner took a double-minor for high-sticking Sharks captain Patrick Marleau at 17:29 of the first.
"We've been dominated a lot worse than that in the first period in this building," MacTavish said.
With just 5.5 seconds remaining in the session, Boyle slid a shot under Roloson, off the goalie's back leg and into the net to tie the game. It was Boyle's 10th goal of the season.
At 8:01 of the second, after a barrage of attempts in front of the crease, Roenick flipped the rebound of Tom Cavanagh's shot past Roloson's stick for a 2-1 edge. The assist was Cavanagh's first career point.
The Oilers evened the game on the power play with 2:11 left in the session, when Penner netted his seventh goal of the campaign on a slap shot.
