Mason, Blue Jackets look for revenge against Kings
Dec 29, 2008 - 2:34 PM Columbus (15-16-4) at Los Angeles (15-15-6), 10:30 p.m. ESTLOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Chris Mason has been surprising stellar for the Columbus Blue Jackets, but fellow rookie Jonathan Quick is accumulating similar accolades with his recent success.
The two young netminders square off for the second time in six days when the Blue Jackets visit the Kings on Monday.
A third-round selection by Columbus in 2006, Mason is 10-7-1 with an NHL-best 1.87 goals-against-average. He is coming off his third shutout in 18 games, making 20 saves in a 3-0 win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday.
But the 20-year-old was given no support against Los Angeles on Tuesday, when the Blue Jackets fizzled in a 3-0 setback, their third straight loss.
Instead, it was Quick that shined for the Kings, making 24 saves for his first career shutout after entering the game with an 0-1-0 record and a 4.68 GAA.
After a 2-1 loss to Phoenix on Friday, Quick was impenetrable once again in Los Angeles' 4-0 victory over the Coyotes in the second game of a home-and-home set the following night.
The 22-year-old turned aside 26 shots for his second blanking in three contests, and will likely get another start in this one.
Quick is 2-2-0 with a 1.88 GAA in five games since being called up from Manchester of the American Hockey League on December 16.
