Langkow helps Flames cruise past reeling Islanders
Jan 9, 2009 - 5:55 AM CALGARY, Alberta (Ticker) -- Daymond Langkow and the Calgary Flames simply are scorching the competition.Langkow recorded a goal and two assists as the Flames scored three unanswered tallies to hand the New York Islanders their 14th consecutive road loss with a 5-2 triumph on Thursday.
Rene Bourque and Mike Cammalleri registered a goal and an assist apiece and Curtis Glencross also tallied for Calgary, which extended its season-high home winning streak to six contests.
Rookie Adam Pardy netted his first career goal, fellow defenseman Adrian Aucoin notched two assists and Miikka Kiprusoff made 24 saves as the Flames improved to 9-1-1 in their last 11 games.
"I don't know, we're just on a roll right now. The puck seems to be going in, and that's nice," said Langkow, who has scored five goals in his last four games. "You have other times when you're struggling and you get great chances and you can't put the puck in the net. You just try and ride it as long as you can."
"We had a lot of speed on our line (with Langkow and Matthew Lombardi) tonight. We could have had a few more, but we chipped in with a couple," Bourque said. "'Lanks' is playing great right now. Everything he's touching is going in the net, so we're just trying to get him the puck as much as possible."
Rookie Trevor Smith scored his first NHL goal and Jeff Tambellini also tallied for New York, which fell to 0-13-1 in its last 14 contests away from Nassau Coliseum.
Joey MacDonald turned aside 36 shots for the Islanders, who have not emerged victorious on the road since defeating the Montreal Canadiens in a shootout on November 24. They are one loss away from matching the longest road losing streak in franchise history.
"We can't be acting like young guys anymore," Tambellini said. "I know it's a young group, but it's a great opportunity to take advantage of the next 40 games and become veteran guys. We've got to find a way to stop playing like rookies."
"We need to start to play 60 minutes," Islanders rookie Kyle Okposo added. "We play 20 some nights and 40 on others, even 55 some nights, but it doesn't work out."
Just 55 seconds after Tambellini leveled the contest at 2-2 late in the second period, Langkow extended his points streak to seven games with his 15th goal of the season.
Bourque skated up the right wing with the puck before feeding Langkow, who wristed a shot past MacDonald with 3:02 remaining in the middle session.
"I don't know it if took the air out of the team," Islanders coach Scott Gordon said. "We came in after the period and we had a power play, and our power play really struggled. That's something we haven't had a whole lot of time to address being on the road here with limited practice time.
"I thought our team had a lot of mental errors, which we haven't seen to the extent we saw them tonight."
After Glencross tallied just 2:52 into the third to make it 4-2, Pardy capped the scoring nearly 4 1/2 minutes later. The 24-year-old received a feed from All-Star Jarome Iginla in the left faceoff circle and unleashed a wrister past MacDonald.
"It was kind of a blur, I don't score too many goals," Pardy said. "It was nice to see one go in, it was a big goal for us.
"Two-goal leads are the worst in hockey. It was nice to get that one and get a three-goal lead."
