Elliott, Senators visit lowly Thrashers

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Apparently, the rebuilding plans of the Ottawa Senators are revolving around Brian Elliott.

The 23-year-old netminder will likely start for the third straight game when the Senators seek their first winning streak since December 3-6 against the lowly Atlanta Thrashers on Wednesday.

Selected in the ninth round in 2003 by Ottawa, Elliott was recalled from Binghamton of the American Hockey League on Friday and turned aside 25 of the 27 shots he faced in a 2-0 loss to the New York Rangers, his first start of the season and second of his career.

He shined on Tuesday, though, making 23 saves and helping Ottawa notch a 5-1 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes after completing a 1-6-1 road trip.

With the rise of Elliott, veteran netminder Martin Gerber has been a healthy scratch and Alex Auld was listed as the backup.

Atlanta, which has dropped 11 of its last 13 home games, is coming off an 8-4 setback to the Florida Panthers on Saturday and surrendered the most goals in a contest since a 10-1 loss at Buffalo on January 18.

All-Star Ilya Kovalchuk will play his first game since being named Atlanta's seventh captain.
