Frolov tallies twice as Kings edge Ducks

Dec 4, 2006 - 3:55 AM ANAHEIM, California (Ticker) -- Alexander Frolov and the Los Angeles Kings finally found a way to beat the Anaheim Ducks.

Frolov tallied twice and Dan Cloutier turned aside 27 shots as the Kings held on for a 3-2 victory over the red-hot Ducks in the finale of a home-and-home series.

Los Angeles entered with losses in four of its last six games, yielding an average of 4.2 goals per contest over that stretch. But Cloutier shut down Anaheim's high-flying offense and Frolov did the rest, recording his fourth multi-goal game this season.

"It's a big win for us, considering that we were playing against one of the top teams in the league," Cloutier said. "And it was good for me personally to get a win."

The Kings owned a 2-1 lead late in the third period when Frolov provided insurance with his second goal of the contest and his team-leading 16th of the season. The Russian left wing collected a rebound at the doorstep and flipped a shot over goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere's left shoulder to make it 3-1 with 1:16 remaining.

"I think we played a good team game tonight," Frolov said. "We didn't make many mistakes in the neutral zone or in our zone. I'm glad to see our goalie play very well. He made some great saves for us, especially against one of the better teams in the league. It was a pretty exciting win for us."

Todd Marchant tallied off a feed from Dustin Penner with 38 seconds left to draw the Ducks within 3-2, but Cloutier held on to help the Kings end their seven-game winless streak against Anaheim.

"I didn't think we played desperate enough until late in the hockey game and that really was was the difference," Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said. "They came out and were a more desperate hockey team to start and it seemed like we got frustrated with it and we didn't react in the proper way.

"There's not too many times you can say that about this group, but tonight was one of those nights."

Derek Armstrong had a goal and an assist for Los Angeles, which improved to 3-9-0 on the road this season.

"Sometimes it's fortunate for a team when you know you're playing a top club and you know you have to be great to beat them. We were tonight," Kings coach Marc Crawford said. "We were very deserving of the win. We played hard and played physically and won with big hits. We did the right things tonight. So, it's top marks for us tonight."

Giguere turned aside 8-of-9 shots after replacing Ilya Bryzgalov, who stopped 30-of-32 shots before leaving with a lower-body injury in the third period. Bryzgalov will be re-evaluated on Monday.

Ryan Getzlaf tallied and Penner had two assists for Anaheim, which had its five-game winning streak snapped.

"Any team can beat anyone on any given night and they proved that this afternoon," Getzlaf said. "They came out and they outworked us for a little while. We got run around a little bit and took a few too many penalties and took ourselves out of it."
