Stajan snaps tie, lifts Maple Leafs over Canadiens

Sep 24, 2006 - 2:03 AM MONTREAL (Ticker) -- The Montreal Canadiens still are searching for their first preseason victory.

Matt Stajan's goal with 6:07 remaining in the third period snapped a tie and lifted the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 4-3 triumph over the Canadiens.

Losers of each of their first three preseason contests, the Canadiens erased a 1-0 deficit on tallies by captain Saku Koivu and defenseman Mark Streit. But Kyle Wellwood and Jeremy Williams scored less than two minutes apart late in the second period to put Toronto back in front.

Michael Ryder's power-play goal a minute into the third forged a 3-3 tie before Stajan tallied later in the session to give the Maple Leafs the lead for good.

Alexander Suglobov had a goal and two assists and Erik Westrum set up a pair of tallies for Toronto, which received a 32-save performance from newcomer Andrew Raycroft.

Streit added two assists for the Canadiens, who went 2-for-11 on the power play.
