Blues to retire Hull's number before game against Detroit

Dec 5, 2006 - 3:30 PM Detroit (14-7-4) at St Louis (7-15-3) 8:00 pm EST

ST. LOUIS (Ticker) - Things in the present might not be so great for the St. Louis Blues, but on Tuesday they will honor a huge part of their past.

The Blues will retire the No. 16 jersey of Brett Hull, one of the greatest players in franchise history, prior to their game against the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday. Hull will be the sixth St. Louis player to have his number retired by the club.

The Blues, who finished last in the NHL last season, have lost four consecutive games. Their latest defeat was a 5-2 decision to the Chicago Blackhawks on Friday.

Defenseman Dennis Wideman and Bill Guerin scored the goals for St. Louis, which pulled starting netminder Curtis Sanford after he allowed two goals on three shots. Manny Legace replaced him and finished with 25 saves on 27 shots.

St. Louis announced on Monday that Sanford could be out up to eight weeks with a strained groin.

The Red Wings had won two straight but then dropped a 3-2 game to the San Jose Sharks on Saturday. Mikael Samuelsson and defenseman Mathieu Schneider scored for the Red Wings, who led, 2-1, after two periods.

Detroit goaltender Joey MacDonald, filling for Dominik Hasek, made 32 saves.
