Canadiens look to build on rare momentum
Feb 24, 2009 - 11:24 AM Vancouver (30-21-8) at Montreal (31-22-7), 7:30 p.m. ESTMONTREAL (Ticker) -- In the midst of a dreadful month, the Montreal Canadiens will try for their second consecutive victory when they host the red-hot Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday.
Montreal has not won back-to-back games since January 15-17, but is coming off a 5-3 victory over Ottawa on Saturday. The win improved the Canadiens' record to 4-11-1 in their last 16 contests.
All-Star Game MVP Alexei Kovalev returned after Montreal general manager Bob Gainey sent him home for two games and had one goal and two assists in the win.
Tomas Plekanec and defenseman Patrice Brisebois scored power-play goals and Mathieu Dandenault and defenseman Mathieu Schneider also tallied for the Canadiens, who are 3-7-1 in the month of February.
Vancouver comes in a winner of four straight and eight of its last nine.
Veteran Mats Sundin scored the game-winning goal in the shootout as the Canucks defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs, 3-2, on Saturday.
Defenseman Sami Salo and Alexandre Burrows each scored in the win. Daniel Sedin added an assist and has registered a point in all four games during the winning streak.
Vancouver defeated Montreal, 4-2, on February 15.
