Red Wings hope to keep Maple Leafs ailing

Dec 9, 2006 - 5:20 PM Toronto (13-12-5) at Detroit (16-7-4)7:00 pm EST

DETROIT (Ticker) -- The Detroit Red Wings aim for their third straight triumph on Saturday when they host the struggling Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Red Wings come off a two-game sweep of Central Division rival St. Louis. Detroit defeated the Blues, 5-1, on Tuesday and 4-3 on Thursday. Detroit overcame a 3-0 deficit in Thursday's win, as Nicklas Lidstrom, Jason Williams, Daniel Cleary and Pavel Datsyuk scored.

Dominik Hasek, whose 1.88 goal-against average is the best in the league, only had to make 18 saves for Detroit, which went 2-for-10 on the power play while denying the Blues on all five of their opportunities with the extra man.

Detroit, the sixth-place club in the Western Conference, has the NHL's 26th-ranked power play. The Red Wings are converting at only a 12.5 percent rate with the extra skater.

Toronto has lost six straight, the latest defeat a 3-1 decision to the Boston Bruins on Thursday. The Maple Leafs, who have blown leads in the third period of their last three losses, got their only goal from Jeff O'Neill on Thursday.

Offensive production has been a problem for the Maple Leafs, who have scored just seven goals in their last five games.
