Kings clock Coyotes

Apr 5, 2009 - 6:15 AM LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Rookie forward Brian Boyle provided the Los Angeles Kings with an answer to their goal-scoring problems.

Boyle scored twice in the first period to jump start the struggling offense in a 6-1 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes on Saturday night.

Alexander Frolov also scored two goals, Justin Williams and Anze Kopitar each added a goal and two assists, and Jonathan Quick made 28 saves to help Los Angeles snap a three-game losing streak. The Kings had scored just nine goals in their past seven games prior to Saturday, while going 1-5-1 over that stretch.

"It was a great feeling to be able to help out, we've been having trouble scoring goals" said Boyle, a first-round selection by the Kings in the 2003 draft who is still trying to make his way in the NHL. The 6-foot-7, 252-pound rookie has three goals in four games since being recalled from Manchester of the AHL on March 28.

"I am trying to stay here for the rest of the year and hopefully string a few good games together," Boyle said.

Shane Doan scored for Phoenix, which had won three in a row.

Rookie goalie Al Montoya made his third consecutive start for the Coyotes and suffered his first NHL loss. He shut out Colorado 3-0 on Wednesday night and beat the Kings 2-1 in Arizona on Thursday night before yielding a half-dozen goals Saturday.

"It's tough for a young guy, their team came out pretty hard tonight," Phoenix coach Wayne Gretzky said. "They were moving their feet and were physical early in the game. We gave the puck away twice and all of a sudden it was 2-0."

Boyle skated low to the net and shuffled a backhander past Montoya 7 minutes after the opening faceoff. He swatted in a loose puck near the edge of the crease for his second goal just under 8 minutes later.

Doan tracked down a puck in the high slot a spun back to whisk a wrist shot past Quick drawing Phoenix to 2-1 2:48 into the second period.

Quick had to make a left pad save on a breakaway attempt by Matthew Lombardi to maintain the lead before Frolov swiped in a pass from Williams to make it 3-1. Frolov, who leads the Kings with 30 goals, returned to the Kings after missing five games because of a lower-body injury.

"We had some chances to tie it up, but we just kind of let it slip," Lombardi said. "And obviously in the third period the Kings took advantage of our mistakes and they buried us from there."

Williams three points were his first point in eight games since being acquired by Los Angeles in a three-way deal with Edmonton and Carolina on March 4. Aside from his assist on Frolov's goal, William's also assisted on Kopitar's third-period score before blasting a 45-foot slap shot past Montoya during a 5-on-3 power play for his first goal in with Los Angeles.

"I have been putting a lot of pressure on myself to contribute," Williams said. "I should be an impact player out there, but the first six or seven games were tough for me. I am happy to contribute offensively and get a power-play goal and help our team."
