Canadiens look to break out of slump
Dec 12, 2006 - 4:10 PM Boston (14-11-2) at Montreal (16-8-5) 7:30 pm ESTMONTREAL (Ticker) -- The Montreal Canadiens' recent slump started against the Boston Bruins.
The Canadiens, who have lost three of their last four, try to break out of it against the same Bruins on Tuesday.
Montreal and Boston hooked up in a wild contest on December 4 in which the Bruins blew a 4-1 lead but came back to win, 6-5. Defenseman Brad Stuart turned out to be the unlikely hero for the Bruins with two goals, including the game-winner at 18:12 of the third period.
Two of Montreal's three losses in their stretch have been in overtime, including a 3-2 shootout loss to the Buffalo Sabres on Monday. Michael Ryder and Sheldon Souray scored the goals for Montreal, both on the power play.
However, Alex Kovalev, Saku Koivu and Sergei Samsonov were all denied by Buffalo's Ryan Miller in the shootout.
Boston has been playing well lately in going 5-2-0 in their last seven. Tim Thomas (12-7-2, 3.05 goals-against average, .905 save percentage) has been the biggest reason for Boston's success, appearing in 20 straight games.
However, Thomas was lifted after the first period of Boston's 5-1 loss to the New Jersey Devils on Saturday after surrendering two goals on 14 shots. Boston coach Dave Lewis said he made the move to shake things up because the Bruins were lethargic.
