Canucks score four first-period goals, roll past Coyotes
Dec 13, 2006 - 5:35 AM VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Ticker) -- Brendan Morrison and the Vancouver Canucks took charge before the Phoenix Coyotes barely had a chance to get through customs.Morrison ignited a four-goal outburst in the first period and Kevin Bieksa and Jan Bulis each had a goal and an assist as the Canucks coasted to a 5-2 victory over the Coyotes.
With the game just 8 1/2 minutes old, Morrison scored his seventh goal of the season on a rebound against netminder Mikael Tellqvist. Bieksa made it 2-0 less than four minutes later on a perfect shot from the right faceoff circle and Bulis extended the advantage 59 seconds later following a bad turnover by the Coyotes.
"Our focus tonight was more on ourselves than them," Morrison said. "Obviously they played last night and got in here late. But tonight we just wanted to worry about our game. I think we continued on from where we left off in Calgary (a 5-3 loss on Saturday). We had a good third period in Calgary and it was something we could build off of."
Canucks defenseman Mattias Ohlund made it 4-0 with a power-play goal at 17:50 of the opening session. The Sedin twins - Henrik and Daniel - assisted on the tallies by Bulis and Ohlund.
Ryan Kesler added to the onslaught early in the second period with his fourth goal of the season. However, that tally came against Curtis Joseph, who came on for the middle session before Tellqvist returned for the third.
"It's nice for a lot of guys to get some confidence, and for the team as well," Canucks captain Markus Naslund said. "To score five goals is unusual this season, so it's a nice sign."
The Coyotes have lost three straight games following a stretch of four wins in five contests.
"We need everybody, each and every person to answer the bell," Coyotes coach Wayne Gretzky said. "And we need everybody to play with the physical capacity they're capable of."
"We weren't very good tonight," Phoenix defenseman Keith Ballard added. "It's hard to score goals and hard to play well when you don't have everyone going."
Roberto Luongo made 28 saves for Vancouver, which has alternated wins and losses in each of its last eight games.
Ed Jovanovski, a defenseman who spent the previous 6 1/2 seasons with the Canucks, was not disappointed about being booed upon his return to Vancouver.
"I don't have any control over that," he said. "There's a pretty good response from most of the fans, so I appreciate that but the other ones, whatever."
