Avalanche aim to build off huge win
Dec 13, 2006 - 3:42 PM St Louis (7-18-4) at Colorado (14-14-2) 9:00 pm ESTDENVER (Ticker) -- The Colorado Avalanche look to build off a huge win when they host the lowly St. Louis Blues on Wednesday.
Colorado captain Joe Sakic felt the Avalanche had to take advantage of their three-game homestand, and they took a big first step when they downed the Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes on Monday, 5-2.
The Avalanche trailed, 2-1, early in the third period, but two quick goals from Andrew Brunette and John-Michael Liles just under two minutes apart gave Colorado a 3-2 lead.
Sakic and Pierre Turgeon then scored insurance goals for the Avalanche, who went 3-for-5 on the power play. Peter Budaj was sharp between the pipes for Colorado, making 26 saves.
Turgeon has two goals in the three games since returning from off-season shoulder surgery.
The Blues lost in Andy Murray's debut as coach, 3-2, to the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday. St. Louis took a 1-0 lead in the first period on Christian Backman's goal, but allowed three straight Blackhawks goals in the second period.
St. Louis' Doug Weight trimmed the deficit to 3-2 with 1:27 left in the second period, but the Blues could not get the equalizer in the third period after only getting five shots.
The Blues have the fewest wins (seven) and points (18) in the league.
