The Devils took a 2-0 first-period lead on Clarkson's power-play goal at 4:30 followed by Olli Malmivaara's shorthanded tally at 13:43. Malmivaara's goal came when he put his own rebound past Washington goaltender Olaf Kolzig.
Parise gave the Devils a 3-0 lead on a 5-on-3 power play at 13:50 of the third period.
Ben Clymer scored the only goal for Washington (1-1-1), which went 0-for-8 on the power play.
New Jersey goaltender Scott Clemmensen stopped 20 of 21 shots after taking over at 10:53 of the second period for Martin Brodeur, who steered aside all 13 shots faced.
