Dixon wins pole for Bombardier Learjet 550K
Jun 7, 2008 - 1:08 AM FORT WORTH, Texas (Ticker) -- Scott Dixon hopes another pole again will result in a trip to Victory Lane.Dixon qualified first for Saturday's Bombardier Learjet 550 on Friday, clocking a top speed of 214.878 miles per hour in 1 minute, 37.5063 seconds.
A New Zealander, the 27-year-old Dixon claimed his fourth pole of the season and is in pursuit of his third win from the top spot in his Target Chip Ganassi Racer.
The winner of the 2008 Indianapolis 500 from the pole, Dixon also captured the GAINSCO Auto Insurance Indy 300 after qualifying first in the initial race of the season. The only race in which Dixon did not win from the front row was the Road Runner Turbo Indy 300 on April 27, when he finished third behind Dan Wheldon.
Dixon will be joined on the front row by Team Penske's Helio Castroneves, who lapped the 1.5-mile oval at an average speed of 214.777 mph. A native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, Castroneves is in second place in the official points standings, 28 behind Dixon.
Castroneves' teammate, Ryan Briscoe, who posted his first IndyCar Series victory June 1 at The Milwaukee Mile, qualified in the third position at 213.937 mph. Joining him in the second row will be Andretti Green Racing rookie Hideki Mutoh, who netted the highest starting position of his rookie season.
Indy Japan 300 winner Danica Patrick and Luczo Dragon Racing's Tomas Scheckter will comprise Row 3. Scheckter won at Texas in 2005.
Wheldon qualified 11th in the record-tying 28-car field. Last year's winner and three-time IRL champion Sam Hornish Jr. will not participate as he is now a rookie on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series circuit.
