Benson wins in Martinsville

Oct 18, 2008 - 9:20 PM MARTINSVILLE, Virginia (Ticker) -- Johnny Benson picked a great time for his first win at Martinsville Speedway.

Benson overcame Ron Hornaday Jr. to win the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Kroger 200 on Saturday.

The fifth victory of the season for Benson moved him past Hornaday atop the series standings, setting up a scintillating finish with just four races remainining.

It looked like Hornaday, who held a 39-point lead at the start of the day, was ready to increase his lead in the race for the title.

Hornaday, who started on the pole, took his Chevrolet to the front and stayed there for the first 154 laps. But Benson moved to the lead on the next lap when Hornaday over-drove the corner in Turn 4 and slid up the track, allowing Benson to pass him.

Hornaday never was able to mount a rally and eventually ran out of fuel on lap 196, leading to a disappointing 29th-place finish that dropped him 65 points behind Benson.

Dennis Setzer, who won the Martinsville race in the spring, finished second in a Dodger. Rick Crawford, Kyle Busch and Todd Bodine rounded out the top five.
