Busch wins Nationwide race at Texas

Nov 1, 2008 - 11:10 PM FORT WORTH, Texas (Ticker) -- Kyle Busch took the checkered flag Saturday, winning the O'Reilly Challenge at Texas Motor Speedway.

The win was a nice consolation prize for Busch, who held the Sprint Cup Series lead in points entering the "Chase for the Championship" but has since dropped to 12th.

Busch held off Carl Edwards, who appeared to be gaining on the leader over the final laps.

"Yeah, we got four tires, and that gave us a chance against the 18," said Edwards, who qualified on the pole. "Those guys were really fast all day.

"Our car was great. We needed about two more laps with the way everything was working out, and I think we would have been really close to catching Kyle, but definitely they did a great job today. Their car was spectacular."

Busch managed to hang on for his 10th victory of the year, tying Sam Ard's record for the most wins in a Nationwide season.

"Sam Ard was one of the pioneers of the sport and this really means a lot to me," Busch said. "I got to thinking about it and I decided I'm going give him $100,000 to try to help him out."

The 23-year-old Busch has 23 total wins in NASCAR's top three series, with eight in the Sprint and three in the Craftsman Truck Series.

Edwards finished second and cut into Clint Bowyer's series points lead. Bowyer, who placed sixth, still holds a 91-point edge on Edwards.

"I think we've got 91 points to make up in two races, which is completely reasonable," Edwards said. "So, I'm very excited about that."

Mark Martin came in third, followed by Joey Logano and David Ragan.
