Button claims pole in Melbourne
Mar 28, 2009 - 7:41 AM MELBOURNE, Australia (Ticker) -- Jenson Button will head an all-Brawn front row after he claimed the pole position for the season-opening Australian Grand Prix during qualifying on Saturday.Button's time of one minute, 26.202 seconds put him three tenths of a second ahead of teammate Rubens Barrichello and on the pole for Sunday's 58-lap race at Albert Park.
"It's been a long time since we've had a car that's competitive," Button said. "But the important thing is that the people on the team believe. ... This is a great moment, not the most important of the weekend, but a great start."
Defending champion Lewis Hamilton of McLaren will start 15th after a problem with his car's gear box kept him on the sidelines during the second qualifying run and prevented him from improving his standing from the first session.
Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull will start third after his time of one minute, 26.830 seconds edged BMW's Robert Kubica (1:26.914).
Williams' Nico Rosberg and Toyota's Timo Glock will start fifth and sixth, respectively, with Felipe Massa of Ferrari starting seventh.
Jarno Trulli of Toyota, Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen, and local-favorite Mark Webber of Red Bull round out the top 10.
