Tough Bird call to exit Sharks for Broncos
May 24, 2017 - 9:35 AM Jack Bird says his decision to walk out on NRL defending premiers Cronulla at season's end and link up with Brisbane is one he had struggled with. After being linked with a big-money deal with Newcastle, Bird's head was turned when the Broncos joined the chase for his services and he elected to join them on a lucrative four-year deal.
Speaking publicly for the first time since his defection was confirmed last month, the 22-year-old admitted finding it tough initially.
"It just came so quick and I was a bit down the first few weeks when it happened," Bird told the Nine Network.
"I'm finally coming to realise what I've done and how proud I am to get it over and done with.
"I'm really looking forward to it."
Bird said it was upsetting to tell his Sharks teammates and coach Shane Flanagan that he would be moving on.
"That was the hardest part," he said.
"To go in there, they're not only my mates - they're my brothers now."
While his future is secure beyond 2017, the NSW Origin representative is hoping his decision is the right one.
"All the arrows led to Brisbane," he said.
