Cowboys squeak past Penrith in NRL win
Jun 24, 2017 - 9:10 AM A last-minute sideline conversion from second rower Ethan Lowe has helped North Queensland escape with a thrilling 14-12 victory over Penrith in Townsville on Saturday.Cowboys winger Kyle Feldt handed his side a chance to steal a win after flying high to score a 78th minute try and part-time goal kicker Lowe made no mistake to hand his side a much-needed win days after the club lost star half Johnathan Thurston for the season.
The Cowboys snapped Penrith's winning streak and ensured their inspirational back-rower Gavin Cooper celebrated his 250th game in winning fashion.
Lowe didn't even go in to the game expecting to kick but a first half knock to Feldt's knee handed the young forward the duties and he was cool as a cucumber with the result on the line.
"There wasn't too much going through my head, I just went back and tried to remember my training and it was great to kick it," Lowe said.
"The boys put on a couple of big plays for me to get that chance, there was some great defence and then Morgo (Michael Morgan) put in a great kick for Feldty to score that late try.
"To pull out a win like that for Coops was pretty special, and it was a typical Coops win, we had to hang in there hard to get the win and that's the way he plays every week."
Panthers skipper Matt Moylan called it a frustrating result after his side conceded 13 errors.
"I think we just had to complete out sets better, that was probably the most frustrating thing," he said.
"We sort of did it to ourselves against Canberra but and we were able to get away with it last week but I guess we learned our lesson today.
"They executed that late kick to perfection and it took a classy finish for them to get the result."
Errors hurt the Cowboys as well and they were severely lacking the direction normally provided by Thurston, but Penrith were also guilty of silly errors when in good attacking position.
Scoring chances failed to materialise for either side as the first half wound down, with the fifth tackle options from both sides leaving a lot be desired in a dour opening forty minutes.
With seven minutes to play North Queensland needed a big play and they got it when a pack tackle forced the Panthers back in-goal for a drop out.
With the game on the line, Morgan launched a speculative bomb that Feldt rose up and snatched in athletic fashion before Lowe sealed the memorable result.
