Brown identifies Knights' biggest problem
Jul 15, 2017 - 5:44 PM It's the trend that Nathan Brown knows his Newcastle side must fix before they can climb the NRL ladder. The Knights' 34-22 loss to Brisbane swung on an errant kick early in the second half, as Brisbane overcame a 12-6 half-time deficit in the blink of an eye as they scored three tries in the space of four sets.
However closer analysis of the Newcastle's 2-15 season shows that where's it's regularly all gone wrong for the Knights.
Saturday's collapse marked the fifth time this season the Knights have conceded tries in back-to-back sets.
Worse still, they have also given up three tries in the space of 10 minutes five times - in a season where they are far more competitive for the majority of periods in matches.
"When we lose that momentum we have that disappointment and then we don't come together with our defence," Brown said.
"And then we leak another try and we're under the pump and then it's here we go again."
Brown was also most frustrated at his team's failure to learn from the mistakes of last week.
Utility Joe Wardle backed up Brock Lamb's last-minute kick into Moses Mbye to give up a late lead last week with a similar effort into James Roberts on Saturday night.
It allowed the Brisbane flyer to scoop up the ball and score, and from there, the Knights never led again.
"Last week we kicked it into Canterbury's fastest player in Moses Mbye and this week we found Jimmy the Jet," Brown said.
"Hodko (halfback Trent Robinson) could have kicked it, Joe could have passed it, Joe could have got tackled. The worst play was to kick it into Jimmy the Jet.
"That played a huge role in the result, but what happened next we've got to fix before we can become a good team anyway."
