Knights confirm Watson NRL signing
Jul 24, 2017 - 4:39 AM Newcastle's rebuild is starting to gather serious pace after confirming the signature of Sydney Roosters utility Connor Watson on a three-year NRL deal beginning in 2018.Watson is expected to play five-eighth next year where he'll link with fellow recruits Kalyn Ponga, Aidan Guerra, Tautau Moga and mid-season pick-up Shaun Kenny-Dowall.
The announcement comes days after the NRL sold the club to Wests Mayfield Group.
"Connor is an exciting young talent who has plenty of great football ahead of him," Knights boss Matt Gidley said on Monday.
"There is no doubt Connor will grow with our team and be a great addition to the club."
Despite having one more season on his deal at the Roosters, Watson was granted a release by the club as he searched for increased game time.
The 21-year-old has spent most of the season playing sporadic minutes off the bench, however is currently playing fullback following a pectoral injury to Michael Gordon.
He scored a try in last week's win over the Knights.
"I'll always be grateful to the Sydney Roosters for the opportunity they gave me, everything I've learned and all the friends I've made," Watson said.
"It's a really special club and I'm just really focused on doing the best job I can for the Roosters for the rest of this season."
