Seibold sought Madge before taking NRL gig
Sep 7, 2017 - 1:41 AM New South Sydney coach Anthony Seibold has revealed he only accepted the role after talking to sacked predecessor Michael Maguire.Assistant coach Seibold was offered the job early on Wednesday morning but only agreed to terms in the afternoon after speaking with Maguire.
The former Melbourne assistant was unveiled to media at Redfern Oval on Thursday and paid tribute to the 2014 premiership-winning coach.
"Having worked under 'Madge' this last 12 months, it's been a great opportunity to learn from him," Seibold said on Thursday.
"I've known Madge for 20 years, we worked together at the (Canberra) Raiders back in 1998 so it's been a really challenging last 24 hours.
"Our family's very good friends with Madge, (Joelle) and the kids. I had a conversation with Madge yesterday afternoon, it was a tough conversation to have.
"But he was really supportive of the opportunity that's been presented to me. I am indebted to Madge for the last 12 months, and he leaves a great legacy here at the Rabbitohs."
It was only after speaking to Maguire that Seibold informed the Rabbitohs of his decision, before addressing staff and players on Thursday morning.
Seibold, who played 14 games at the Raiders in 1998, said he was privileged to take on the job.
"I'm really proud to be asked to be the head coach of the Rabbitohs, a foundation club and widely considered one of the most supported clubs in the competition in Australia," he said.
Rabbitohs general manager of football Shane Richardson said after 11 years working as an assistant at Melbourne, Manly and South Sydney, Seibold was ready to take the step up.
"Anthony has done a long apprenticeship with some of the best coaches and organisations in rugby league and we believe he is the man to take our team to the next level," he said.
