Gagai sets sights on Rabbitohs centre role

Nov 10, 2017 - 4:24 AM South Sydney recruit Dane Gagai has his sights set on playing right centre after dismissing the thought of dethroning skipper Greg Inglis as Rabbitohs fullback next NRL season.

Ahead of the Kangaroos' Rugby League World Cup clash against Lebanon on Saturday night, Australian winger Gagai said he enjoyed playing fullback at former club Newcastle but couldn't see himself wearing the Rabbitohs No.1 jersey any time soon.

"(Inglis is) pretty set I think. He's earned the right to play wherever he wants to play and I'm sure whatever number he chucks on his back he's going to kill it in that position," Gagai told

"I'll probably be looking more for that right centre role.

"I love playing fullback, don't get me wrong.

"But I love the fact of having a centre on the opposite side of much as it's a team game, there's a little one-on-one battle between you two."

New Rabbitohs coach Anthony Seibold declared 30 year old Inglis would remain as captain and get first crack at No.1 when the NRL star returned to pre-season training last week.

Inglis' 2017 season lasted barely an hour before he suffered a knee injury in South Sydney's opening round clash.

Inglis will make his official comeback to the field in Charity Shield match against St George Illawarra on February 24.
