Smith leads Wizards in opening 4-0 win over DC

Mar 28, 2010 - 2:56 AM KANSAS CITY, Kan.(AP) -- Ryan Smith had a goal and an assist in his Major League Soccer debut, and the Wizards spoiled former coach Curt Onalfo's return to Kansas City with a 4-0 victory Saturday night against D.C. United.

Smith, who left English side Crystal Palace earlier this year when his contract expired, assisted on Davy Arnaud's first-half goal for a 2-0 lead and made it 3-0 with a putback in the 54th minute.

Onalfo was Kansas City's coach for 2 1/2 years until he was fired in the middle of the 2009 season and replaced by current coach Peter Vermes.

Danish keeper Jimmy Nielsen, who joined the Wizards after they traded MLS career saves, wins and shutouts leader Kevin Hartman's rights to FC Dallas, made three saves in his league debut.
