Montero gives Sounders win at Red Bull Arena
May 16, 2010 - 3:30 AM HARRISON, N.J.(AP) -- Colombian striker Fredy Montero scored in the 86th minute in the Seattle Sounders' 1-0 victory oveer the New York Red Bulls on Saturday night.Montero took a long pass from Brad Evans and beat goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul from close range for his third goal of the season. Benched because in recent weeks, Montero came on as substitute in the 78th minute.
"The silence when I scored the goal was the best," Montero said. "For any goal scorer playing on the road that's the most satisfying thing."
Former U.S. national team goalkeeper Kasey Keller made two saves for the shutout to help the Sounders (3-3-3) snap a four-game winless streak.
The Red Bulls (5-3) lost for the first time at first-year Red Bull Arena.
We had a team we were better than, that we should have put away," Red Bulls defender Mike Petke said. "We didn't and they ended up walking out of here with a positive result for themselves."
Seattle coach Sigi Schmid made the decision to sit Montero earlier in the week, and nearly didn't bring the striker on the trip after he came down with the stomach flu.
"(Montero) hadn't scored from the run of play since the first game of the season," Schmid said. "He had that big free kick goal in Dallas, but hadn't really scored from the run of play and we just felt that he needed a little more energy to his game and it wasn't there at the moment.
"Fredy accepted the decision well. I said 'You're going to play minutes in this game, it's probably going to be the most important minutes of the game.' He said, 'I want to come in and I want to make a difference.'
"Obviously, he did."
