Gavin scores to give Chivas USA 1-1 tie with Union
Jul 4, 2010 - 5:32 AM CARSON, Calif.(AP) -- Blair Gavin scored in the 42nd minute to give Chivas USA a 1-1 tie with the Philadelphia Union on Saturday night.Chivas USA (3-9-2) broke a six-game losing streak against MLS opponents.
"A tie is not something to brag about," Chivas USA coach Martin Vasquez said. "Our goal was to win and to turn this around. At times, we're not making good decisions and instead of being patient, we're trying to play more direct.
"Right now, we need everybody to give us 100 percent. That's the only way we're going to turn this around."
Vasquez added that he plans to bring in "two or three" new players before the international transfer period ends July 15. Midfielder Paulo Nagamura, who played for Chivas USA from 2007-09, will be one of the new players.
"We need to strengthen the team," Vasquez said. "I believe these players are going to be extremely important for the games that are left."
Philadelphia dropped to 3-7-2.
"I'm not happy with the way we played," Union coach Peter Nowak said. "That's very clear and I let my team know about that. We missed a lot of plays, a lot of good opportunities going forward."
Gavin scored his second goal of the season by intercepting Cristian Arrieta's clearance and firing a low 23-yard shot inside the right post.
Danny Mwanga gave the Union a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute with a diagonal 7-yard shot inside the right post over prone goalkeeper Zach Thornton.
Arrieta began the play by chipping the ball forward to Roger Torres. Sebastien Letoux headed Torres's pass behind himself to an unmarked Mwanga.
But Thornton kept Philadelphia from regaining the lead in the 65th minute, when he slid 15 yards from the goal to make a point-blank save on Fred's shot.
Chivas USA's Jonathan Bornstein played his first game since returning from the World Cup in South Africa, where he played for the United States.
