Vancouver escapes Chivas with three points

Mar 18, 2012 - 5:24 AM Carson, CA (Sports Network) - Vancouver Whitecaps FC maintained its perfect start to the 2012 Major League Soccer season with a 1-0 win over Chivas USA at The Home Depot Center on Saturday.

The lone goal of the match came courtesy of Jay DeMerit as the Whitecaps captain nodded home the winner for Vancouver's first ever road victory in MLS.

Chivas may feel a bit unlucky to come away empty-handed. The Goats held the edge in shots on goal and dictated play with far more possession than their Western Conference counterparts.

But in a cruel twist of fate, the Whitecaps went in front after making the most of a set-piece opportunity in the second half.

Camilo Sanvezzo delivered a corner kick to the back post in the 68th minute and DeMerit met the cross, unmarked, with a brilliant diving header that hit the back of the net untouched.

Vancouver did not relinquish the lead, preserving the clean sheet with another water-tight defensive display.

The 'Caps are now 2-0-0 on the season and have claimed six points by a combined score of 3-0. It is a much-improved start for Vancouver after an abysmal debut season in MLS that saw the Cascadia club finish tied for last place in all of MLS.

Martin Rennie's men will look to remain perfect in their next league contest as they welcome D.C. United to BC Place on March 24.

Things will not get much easier for Chivas. The Goats will go for their first win of the season in their next outing, which will undoubtedly be a tall order as Robin Fraser leads his men to Rio Tinto Stadium to face Real Salt Lake on March 24.
