RSL blanks New York for second straight win

Mar 18, 2012 - 4:23 AM Sandy, UT (Sports Network) - Real Salt Lake continued its strong start to the new season by securing a 2-0 win over Red Bull New York on Saturday at Rio Tinto Stadium.

Fabian Espindola tallied the opening goal for Salt Lake (2-0-0) before Luis Gil added the second shortly before the hour mark, allowing the club follow up a 3-1 win at the Los Angeles Galaxy with three more points.

New York (0-2-0) posed a minimal threat in attack and has lost its first two games by a combined score of 4-1.

Paulo Jr. was the first to test Red Bulls goalkeeper Ryan Meara, who made a nice save to prevent the opening goal in the 36th minute.

But Meara was beaten just two minutes later after Victor Palsson's giveaway led to Paulo Jr. playing Espindola into the area before he slid a shot between the legs of the 'keeper.

The home side doubled its advantage shortly before the hour mark when Sebastian Velasquez got into the area and pulled the ball back for Espindola, whose shot was stopped by Meara but finished off by Gil on the rebound.

One of the lone bright spots for New York was an acrobatic bicycle kick that Thierry Henry attempted in the 64th minute, with the ball sailing just wide.

But New York was unable to really threaten the goal of Nick Rimando and he held on for his first clean sheet of the season.
