Cannon, Whitecaps extend unbeaten start against D.C.

Mar 25, 2012 - 4:41 AM Vancouver, BC (Sports Network) - Vancouver Whitecaps FC has not allowed a goal after three matches, and Joe Cannon earned the team's latest shutout Saturday.

While counterpart Joe Willis did not face a shot on goal, Cannon finished with three saves, including a great one-handed stop, as Vancouver remained unbeaten with a 0-0 draw against winless D.C. United at BC Place.

Vancouver (2-0-1) started the season with back-to-back wins over the expansion Montreal Impact and Chivas USA, but struggled as D.C. (0-2-1) earned its first point of the season.

United lost to Sporting Kansas City in its opener, and dropped its second game at the Los Angeles Galaxy. Although D.C. failed to create a ton of chances, it was far more dangerous than Vancouver.

An uneventful first half saw neither team create a true scoring threat, but it was United that forced Cannon to preserve Vancouver's unbeaten start after the break.

Hamdi Salihi had the best chance in the 67th minute when he turned a header on goal from deep inside the area, but Cannon dove to his right and extended his arm to deflect the shot off the line and the Whitecaps cleared.

Reigning MVP Dwayne De Rosario had the final chance to hand D.C. three points, but his attempt from a tight angle on the left side of the box in the 83rd was saved at the left post by Cannon.

Vancouver tied for the fewest points in Major League Soccer last season in its first year in the league, but sits atop the Western Conference after its first three matches.

United used its first point of the season to climb out of a tie for last place in the Eastern Conference.

Whitecaps FC visits the Philadelphia Union on March 31 for its next match, and United returns to action Friday at home against FC Dallas.
