Sporting held to draw by Houston
Jul 8, 2012 - 2:12 AM Kansas City, KS (Sports Network) - The Houston Dynamo and Sporting Kansas City played to a 0-0 draw at Livestrong Sporting Park on Saturday, leaving Sporting tied atop the Eastern Conference with D.C. United.Chances were few and far between for both sides, with Kansas City goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen being called upon in the 16th minute to make a save on Houston's Boniek Garcia, who got free down the right wing but failed to beat Nielsen.
The closest that either side came to scoring was in the 33rd minute when Sporting's Jacob Peterson found space at the edge of the penalty area and fired a shot off the left post.
The second half offered little more in the way of scoring opportunities as C.J. Sapong shot just wide from 10 yards for Kansas City, while Houston's Brian Ownby had the final shot to break the deadlock in the 90th minute.
Ownby pounced on a ball inside the penalty area, but Nielsen came off his line to cut down the angle and smother the shot, preserving a point for the home side.
