Sporting, New England play to scoreless draw

Jul 22, 2012 - 3:16 AM Kansas City, KS (Sports Network) - The New England Revolution have found road points hard to come by this season, but they held on at Livestrong Sporting Park on Saturday for a well-earned 0-0 draw with Sporting Kansas City.

New England entered the match with just four points from nine games away from Gillette Stadium this season, but the Revs were able to take a point at a venue that has seen Sporting now claim 20 points from 10 games in 2012.

In a match where scoring opportunities were at a premium, the Revs were able to produce arguably the best chance of the night.

Lee Nguyen's corner kick in the 15th minute was met by Ryan Guy's diving header, but Jimmy Nielsen pulled off a brilliant reaction save amid protests from multiple New England players that the shot had crossed the line. The goal was not given and play was allowed to continue.

The draw means that Sporting (11-6-4) misses out on the opportunity to reclaim first place in the East, slipping to second place after Red Bull New York picked up a 2-0 win over the Philadelphia Union earlier on Saturday. Kansas City will look to keep the pressure on the Red Bulls with maximum points in its next outing, a home match against the Columbus Crew.

New England (6-9-5) returns to action on July 29 with a trip to PPL Park to face the Union.
