Bernier helps Impact cruise past DCU
Aug 25, 2012 - 10:16 PM Montreal, QC (Sports Network) - The Montreal Impact continued their run of fine form, winning their fifth straight league match with a 3-0 victory over D.C. United at the Stade Saputo on Saturday.Patrice Bernier played a starring role in the momentous win, setting up Marco Di Vaio in the opening period before scoring two of his own in the second half.
The win sees Montreal (12-13-3) move to within one point of D.C. (12-9-4) for the final playoff slot in the Eastern Conference, though United still hold three games in hand.
Di Vaio opened the scoring midway through the first half, collecting a through ball from Bernier and curling a brilliant effort into the far upper corner.
The lead was doubled less than five minutes after the restart. The Impact were awarded a penalty when Emiliano Dudar barged into Collen Warner in the 49th minute. Bernier made no mistake from the spot, sending Bill Hamid the wrong way and calmly slotting a low shot in the back of the net.
Bernier put the icing on the cake in second-half stoppage time, collecting a pass from Matteo Ferrari and firing a shot that took a fortuitous deflection to get past Hamid.
D.C. will look to regroup as it heads home for a midweek clash with Red Bull New York on Wednesday. Montreal returns to action on September 1 with a match at the Columbus Crew.
