Saborio's double lifts Real Salt Lake past San Jose

Mar 4, 2013 - 5:13 AM Santa Clara, CA (Sports Network) - Alvaro Saborio netted a second-half brace as Real Salt Lake topped the San Jose Earthquakes, 2-0, on Sunday at Buck Shaw Stadium.

San Jose played without forwards Steven Lenhart and Alan Gordon due to injury, leaving reigning MLS MVP Chris Wondolowski to play with newly-acquired forward Mike Fucito in a 4-4-2 formation.

Despite having never started together, Wondolowski and Fucito created several chances together in the first half, but were unable to find the back of the net as the teams went into the break scoreless.

Salt Lake finally found its breakthrough in the 71st minute when substitute Joao Plata lofted a long ball over the top for Saborio, who tracked it down and fired it into the bottom right corner with a first-time strike to put the visitors ahead.

Saborio completed his double five minutes from time when he ran onto a nice through ball from Kyle Beckerman and slotted it past San Jose goalkeeper Jon Busch with a left-footed strike to wrap up all three points.

San Jose had a few chances in the final minutes, but was unable to find the net in the setback.
