Late stumble costs RSL against Vancouver

Apr 13, 2013 - 10:23 PM Vancouver, BC (Sports Network) - Vancouver Whitecaps FC took advantage of a late mistake to earn a 1-1 draw with Real Salt Lake on Saturday at BC Place.

With RSL leading 1-0 in the last 10 minutes, Salt Lake defender Nat Borchers slipped while trying to make a clearance, falling on the ball with his arm and handing Vancouver a chance to level the match from the penalty spot.

And Camilo made no mistake with his chance, sending goalkeeper Nick Rimando the wrong way from the spot and bouncing the ball in off the post.

The Whitecaps are winless in their last four games, but the result is a positive one for a team that earned just one point from a recent three-game road trip.

Vancouver had Salt Lake on the defensive in the first half as Lee Young-Pyo forced a diving save from Rimando, while Camilo missed the net from four yards on the ensuing corner kick.

A free kick from Camilo 10 minutes later also required a nice stop from Rimando, who was a big reason why RSL was able to stay level at halftime.

But the breakthrough came from the visitors in the 66th minute when Javier Morales dropped a pass off to substitute Olmes Garcia, who curled a well- placed shot inside the far post.

Alain Rochat went close with a volley 15 minutes from time for the Whitecaps, but the slip by Borchers gave Vancouver the equalizer it was pushing for.

Borchers did have a chance to atone for his error in stoppage time, but his header was kept out by a fine stop from Vancouver goalkeeper Joe Cannon.
