Colorado cools Chivas with early PK

Apr 14, 2013 - 4:36 AM Carson, CA (Sports Network) - A seventh-minute penalty kick from Deshorn Brown was enough to help the Colorado Rapids to a 1-0 win over Chivas USA at The Home Depot Center on Saturday.

After a winless run of five matches to start the season, the Rapids have now won back-to-back contests, while Chivas lost for the first time since its opening game of the campaign, snapping a four-match unbeaten run.

Brown set up his chance from the penalty spot when he was brought down inside the area by Chivas midfielder Eric Avila.

He then stepped to the spot and tucked the ball inside the left post past goalkeeper Dan Kennedy.

Colorado had the better of an open first half and Atiba Harris was particularly dangerous, forcing Kennedy to stop a powerful shot with his legs in the 26th minute while also being denied by a fingertip save late in the half.

But Chivas had an opportunity in the 36th minute to return the favor from the spot when Colorado's Shane O'Neill fouled Tristan Bowen inside the box.

However, Jose Correa was unable to duplicate the goal by Brown as he saw his effort crash off the crossbar.

Chivas was better after the break and had a good opportunity in the 58th minute that was volleyed over the net from 12 yards by Laurent Courtois.

Carlos Alvarez also had a good look at goal from the edge of the area for Chivas, but he too fired over the net with only goalkeeper Clint Irwin to beat, capping a frustrating night for the Goats.
