Larentowicz leaves it late as Fire tops Crew
Apr 21, 2013 - 2:38 AM Bridgeview, IL (Sports Network) - Jeff Larentowicz netted the lone goal of the match in the 83rd minute on Saturday to lift the Chicago Fire to a 1-0 win over the Columbus Crew at Toyota Park.Chicago had the majority of the chances, especially in the second half, but had to wait until the 83rd minute to cash in as Larentowicz nodded home a flicked header from Austin Berry to give the Fire a second win in three games.
Columbus forward Dominic Oduro had the lone chance of note in a lackluster first half when he got into the penalty area on the right and fired just wide of the far post 15 minutes into the match.
But the home side took control from the start of the second half and the Fire's Gonzalo Segares was denied the opening goal by the leg of Crew goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum.
Chris Rolfe kept Gruenebaum busy as he shot just past the left post in the 56th minute before the netminder needed to make a good reaction stop on Rolfe 20 minutes later to tip his shot past the post.
Gruenebaum also needed to be alert to keep out a close-range header from Berry, but he couldn't stop the header from Larentowicz seven minutes from time, which came from a long throw-in by Chicago's Jalil Anibaba which Berry helped on at the near post.
