Columbus piles more misery on D.C. United
Apr 28, 2013 - 2:29 AM Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - The Crew piled more misery on D.C. United on Saturday as Columbus cruised to a 3-0 victory at Crew Stadium. The start of the match was delayed by approximately one hour after the stadium's scoreboard caught on fire, and the Crew managed to adapt to the setback better than their counterparts.
The home side went on to put three first-half goals past United, which suffered its fifth successive defeat with the result.
Columbus took the lead in the 15th minute when Jairo Arrieta turned his defender in the box and fired a low cross in front of goal to find Dominic Oduro, who thumped his shot into the back of the net.
The Crew doubled their advantage 11 minutes later when Josh Williams guided Federico Higuain's corner kick just inside the far post. United goalkeeper Bill Hamid got a hand to the effort but was unable to keep it out of his own net.
D.C. United's hopes of making it to halftime without falling any further behind were dashed in stoppage time when Brandon McDonald tripped up Arrieta in the box. Referee Sorin Stoica pointed to the spot and Higuain hammered the ensuing kick into the upper corner to leave Hamid no chance.
The Crew killed the match off in professional fashion as Andy Gruenebaum's clean sheet only came under threat in stoppage time when Lionard Pajoy's free kick struck the crossbar.
The result sees Columbus (3-2-3) claim its first league win since topping D.C. with a 2-1 victory at RFK Stadium on March 23.
United (1-6-1) is winless in its last six outings, taking just one point over that stretch to remain in the Eastern Conference cellar on four points.
