Cronin claims point for 'Quakes with late goal
May 4, 2013 - 10:15 PM Santa Clara, CA (Sports Network) - The San Jose Earthquakes once again rallied late to earn a 2-2 draw at Buck Shaw Stadium on Saturday against the Montreal Impact.A pair of goals from Justin Mapp in the first 47 minutes had the Impact in control, only for the 'Quakes to start their rally in the 59th with a goal from Adam Jahn.
And in typical Earthquakes fashion, the equalizer arrived in stoppage time with Chris Wondolowski heading the ball down for Sam Cronin to fire inside the far post.
The home side kept Montreal goalkeeper Troy Perkins busy in the first half as Jahn sent a volley off the crossbar and Wondolowski headed the rebound on goal, forcing Perkins to make a scrambling save.
Perkins also did well to keep out a close-range effort from Rafael Baca by tipping the ball over the crossbar.
The Impact had one chance of note in the first half, but Mapp made it count as he found space to unleash a shot from 30 yards that clipped the right post and went into the net.
It was a fine strike from Mapp, and he had much less to do in the 47th minute to double his tally as he arrived at the back post to tap in a shot from Andrew Wenger, whose effort from a tight angle was tipped by San Jose goalkeeper Jon Busch.
Jahn scored in the 59th to cut the deficit in half after some neat passing on the edge of the penalty area, and Cronin provided the equalizing goal in dramatic fashion, firing home his shot after Wondolowski had knocked down a long ball from Walter Martinez.
