Chavez helps 'Quakes claim point against Colorado

May 19, 2013 - 4:50 AM Santa Clara, CA (Sports Network) - A stunning free kick from Marvin Chavez in the 78th minute allowed the San Jose Earthquakes to claim a 1-1 draw with the Colorado Rapids at Buck Shaw Stadium on Saturday.

As they have so many times this season, the Earthquakes fell behind in the first half to a goal from Colorado's Nathan Sturgis.

A strong second-half performance allowed the home side to earn a point, although Frank Yallop's men have captured just one win from their last nine games.

The opening goal came from a 26th-minute corner kick as Martin Rivero drove the ball to the near post, where Sturgis redirected it past goalkeeper Jon Busch from a few yards.

Adam Jahn nearly equalized in the 44th when his header narrowly bounced over the crossbar, while Atiba Harris went closer for the Rapids as he struck the post in first-half stoppage time.

Colorado goalkeeper Clint Irwin was forced to make an acrobatic save on a powerful effort from San Jose's Walter Martinez, but he failed to keep out the rocket from Chavez 12 minutes from time, which knuckled past the befuddled goalkeeper.

The visitors had two chances in the final 10 minutes to snatch the win, but a header from Sturgis struck the crossbar, while Busch came off his line to deflect a shot from Deshorn Brown onto the roof of the net.
