Union denied by late PK from RSL's Morales
Jul 4, 2013 - 4:13 AM Sandy, UT (Sports Network) - Javier Morales snatched a point for Real Salt Lake on Wednesday as he converted a penalty kick deep into stoppage time to help his side to a 2-2 draw with the Philadelphia Union at Rio Tinto Stadium.RSL's Lovel Palmer was sent off in the 59th minute with his team down 1-0, but Luis Gil managed to level the contest 15 minutes from time with a header.
However, the Union looked to have secured three points with a goal from Conor Casey one minute later, only for Philadelphia's Raymon Gaddis to be called for a handball inside his own penalty area in the dying moments.
Morales stepped to the spot and fired his kick off the post and into the net, extending RSL's unbeaten streak to seven games.
Sebastien Le Toux put the Union ahead after 13 minutes following a nice set up from Casey, while RSL failed to take advantage of a few chances late in the half.
Palmer's red card in the 59th for a late challenge on Michael Farfan left the home side down a man and a goal with 30 minutes to play. However, Gil rose up to head home a corner kick in the 75th, pulling his side level for the moment.
But it took just one minute for the Union's lead to be restored as Antoine Hoppenot beat a defender and set up a simple finish for Casey.
A win would have allowed the Union to climb into second place in the Eastern Conference, but the late penalty decision means that the club remains tied in third with Sporting Kansas City.
