Union roll past 10-man Chivas USA
Jul 13, 2013 - 1:44 AM Chester, PA (Sports Network) - The Philadelphia Union netted three goals in a stellar second half to come away with a 3-1 victory over 10-man Chivas USA on Friday at a sloppy PPL Park. The conditions were less than ideal as the match kicked off in a driving rain, which contributed to the visitors opening the scoring in the 14th minute.
On the play which led to the opening goal, Philadelphia defender Amobi Okugo slipped on the wet turf which allowed Jorge Villafana to collect the loose ball and slide it over to Jose Correa, who rolled it into the empty net.
The Union had several chances to find an equalizer over the first 45 minutes, but squandered the chances as the home side went into the break down a goal.
But Philadelphia came out inspired in the second half and grabbed an equalizer in the 58th minute when Sebastien Le Toux sent a low cross into the box which hit off Conor Casey and the back of Brian Carroll before flying past Chivas goalkeeper Dan Kennedy.
Controversy arose in the 80th minute as referee Jorge Gonzalez whistled Chivas midfielder Josue Soto for an illegal back pass, which resulted in a second yellow card to Soto and an indirect free kick for Philadelphia from just inside the penalty spot.
Le Toux lined up for the kick and touched it over to Michael Farfan, who blasted it over the wall of Chivas players and into the roof of the net to give the Union the lead.
Philadelphia wrapped it up one minute from time when new signing Fabinho sent a nice left-footed cross into the box for Casey, who directed it home to make it a two-goal Philadelphia advantage.
The result lifts Philadelphia (8-6-6) to 30 points, good for second place in the East, while Chivas' winless run is extended to 14 consecutive matches.
