Torres helps Chivas end winless drought

Jul 18, 2013 - 4:44 AM Carson, CA (Sports Network) - Erick Torres scored on his Chivas USA debut to help the club snap a 14-game winless run on Wednesday as the Goats earned a 1-0 victory over Toronto FC at the StubHub Center.

Torres made his first MLS appearance since joining the Goats from Chivas de Guadalajara, and he marked it with a vital goal to give his side its first win since March 30.

Chivas (4-11-5) improves to 17 points on the season but still remains seven points adrift of a place outside of the Western Conference cellar.

The match turned in Toronto's favor in the 25th minute when Eric Avila was harshly sent off for a challenge on Darel Russell.

But despite playing down a man, Chivas had the better run of play and nearly opened the scoring when Tristan Bowen broke free on the right flank in the 60th minute and fired a low cross into the box. Torres collected the delivery and found himself one-on-one with Joe Bendik, but the Toronto goalkeeper pulled off a miraculous save to keep the match scoreless.

Torres ultimately had the last laugh, though, as he collected another pass from Bowen in the 79th minute, drifted inside and fired a shot that took a deflection on its way past Bowen.

Toronto (2-10-7) created little in the way of scoring chances throughout the match, bringing the club's winless run to five games.
