RSL stunned by Chivas USA

Oct 6, 2014 - 1:07 AM Carson, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Real Salt Lake wasted an opportunity to clinch a postseason berth on Sunday as the Claret-and-Cobalt suffered a 1-0 defeat to Chivas USA at the StubHub Center.

RSL entered the match in third place in the Western Conference with 49 points and needing three points to clinch their spot, but Jeff Cassar's team was off the pace for most of the game and will remain in third place with three games remaining in the regular season.

Chivas USA has struggled all season, but picked up the only goal of the match early in the second half through Felix Borja to improve to 27 points on the season, but the Goats remain rooted to the bottom of the West standings.

After a scoreless first half, Chivas broke the deadlock in the 47th minute when RSL subtitute Rich Balchan lost possession in his own half to Erick Torres, whose chipped effort hit the crossbar, but Borja was there to clean up the rebound.

The Goats had an opportuinity to double the lead in the 65th minute when Balchan took down Torres in the box, resulting in a penalty kick, but RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando came up with a huge stop to keep his side in the game.

RSL's best scoring chance came in the 78th minute as Javier Morales lined up a free kick from 24 yards out on the right side of the pitch, but his strike was straight at Chivas goalkeeper Dan Kennedy.

With the fourth official's board showing five minutes of added time, RSL pushed forward for a late equalizer, but it never materialized and RSL suffered its eighth defeat of the season.
