RSL eases past Chivas USA at Rio Tinto

Oct 23, 2014 - 3:29 AM Sandy, UT (SportsNetwork.com) - Real Salt Lake closed out its regular season in style on Wednesday, rolling to a 2-0 victory over 10-man Chivas USA at Rio Tinto Stadium.

With a playoff berth already secured, RSL was hoping to finish the regular season strong and Jeff Cassar's men achieved their goal with tallies from Alvaro Saborio and captain Kyle Beckerman to move into third place in the West with 56 points, two clear of FC Dallas.

Chivas USA entered the match some confidence riding a two-match winning streak and looking for the season sweep of RSL, but the Goats created very little in the way of scoring chances and remain in eighth place in the West with 30 points.

The home side broke the deadlock in the 36th minute as Saborio was pulled down in the box by Bobby Burling, resulting in a penalty kick which the Costa Rica international buried into the bottom left corner with ease.

Things became more difficult for Chivas in the 56th minute thanks to a moment of madness from midfielder Marvin Chavez, who was shown a straight red card for hitting the assistant referee with an errant clearance.

Real Salt Lake then added the insurance goal in the 74th minute as Joao Plata worked his way to the top of the box and spotted Beckerman free on his left. Plata slid the ball into the path of Beckerman and the American international fired it between the legs of Goats' goalkeeper Dan Kennedy for his third goal of the season.

RSL's back line held firm over the final quarter-hour to keep the clean sheet and send Chivas USA to its 16th defeat of the season.
